![]() The first tranche of the order, worth CHF36 million, involves fitting out Métro line 1. The order includes the development, manufacture, installation and putting into operation of more than 10km of platform screens fitted with 2,000 fully automatic, half-height platform screen doors. This major project, which was put out to international tender by Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), is worth CHF 70 million. The work will be done in two stages for completion in 2011. Kaba Gilgen will be installing half-height platform screen doors on Parisian Métro lines 1 and 13. For example, Swiss company Kaba Gilgen has recently won a major order in Paris, France. ![]() These numerous benefits mean that transport operators are increasingly looking to install PSDs. Their main disadvantage is that it is possible to climb over them. As such, some railway operators may prefer such an option to improve safety at railway platforms and, at the same time, keeping costs low and non-air-conditioned platforms naturally-ventilated. As compared to platform screen doors, these half-height platform gates are relatively cheaper to install as they require less metallic framework for support. Like full-height platform screen doors, these platform gates slide open or close simultaneously with the train doors. Their primary purpose is to prevent passengers from falling off the platform edge onto the railway tracks. Platform safety gates (also known as ‘platform gate doors’) are approximately half the height of PSDs – reaching chest or waist height. ![]() The safety and aesthetic benefit of PEDs were also part of the justification, and they contribute greatly to the impression of an impressive, modern underground railway. The PEDs do not reach the platform ceiling, but stop slightly short allowing ventilation of the platform by the air forced ahead of each train, but the screen prevents uncomfortably high air-speeds. To achieve this on the platforms would have required either substantial civil works to increase the tunnel diameter at the platform/tunnel interface or the inclusion of Platform Edge Doors. The specification for the upgraded Jubilee Line included a maximum air-speed in passenger areas. PEDs were installed on the new platforms for a number of reasons, but the primary justification was that of passenger comfort. An example of these types of doors can be found on all platforms of the sub-surface stations of the Jubilee Line Extension on the London Underground in the UK. ![]() These are full height but do not touch the ceiling and so do not create a total barrier. Since then the safety aspects of these doors have become more important. Although they were considered a novelty at the time, the PSDs were introduced primarily to minimise hefty air-conditioning costs. According to leading PSD designer, manufacturer and installer, Westinghouse Platform Screen Doors, the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) was the first heavy rail system in the world to incorporate platform screen doors in its stations (in 1987), which it supplied. Full height PSDs which create a total barrier between the station floor and ceiling. In addition, PSDs can also offer protection from the weather when used in the open air. According to Faiveley Transport, a global PSD manufacturer, the savings obtained through improved energy efficiency and cuts in heating and air-conditioning costs “can match the costs of installing doors themselves”. PSDs also improve climate control within the station. This helps prevent suicides, reduces the risk of accidents (especially when trains pass though the station at speed) and stops people entering tunnels. Your contact is very important and with it we can constantly improve our apps. The most obvious benefit is that PSDs act as a physical barrier preventing people or objects from falling or trespassing onto the tracks.
